So obviously, I scoured through threads showing cars with the Megans, RPMs, AutoExe, and even coil-overs. This Mazdaspeed6 was the best handling stock vehicle I’d ever owned and so, I was extremely hesitant to pursue any suspension modifications.Įarly on in any vehicle I own, I always look into the suspension choices. I’d lowered cars in the past, and while there was improvement in each application to some degree, it always had its drawbacks.
Tuned so balanced, that it felt absolutely solid at high speeds, while remaining somewhat plush and comfortable over speed bumps at parking lot speeds. But it wasn’t the ride height that impressed me. In stock trim, the Mazdaspeed6 boasted a tolerable ride height. Coming out of a Mustang that rode on a stiff set of H&R springs dampened by Koni Yellows, this car was a change. There is a lot of back-story and I’ve tried to touch very lightly on the way things work for those who are unfamiliar. More when I hear from Addco.Disclaimer: I apologize in advance for the length of this post, but my intention was to cover as much as I could regarding my impressions of this modification. Have done this on many vehicles I've owned. Working with the rear bar is a relative easy handling adjustment. I just prefer to drive something with more neutral balance. My goal is to get the car looser entering turns so it does not feel so cumbersome and always hearing the front tires squeal.
What I consider safe is subjective, it will be my seat of the pants. There needs to still be some level of understeer to maintain a safe handling vehicle. An important consideration is the shift in CG with passengers and luggage added. I also will be installing H&R lowering springs later, so I want to baseline the car before I make this change. If this doesn't doesn't change the cornering balance enough to suppress the understeer, I might then increase the dia. I will then test this on my car (looking forward to that!). 870" (7/8" dia.) REAR bar I sent and I should know in a couple of weeks if they were successful to make a 1" bar. This will be a development process, one step at a time. I am still doing some more digging but not sure there are any sub 5000lb crossovers that are any bigger than that.

PS for those with FWD Flexes, you might check the diameter of your stock rear bar, the 7/8" bar may be larger diameter and $117 from the dealer, is a cheap upgrade.

I will post an update when I have an estimate for delivery and cost. This is significantly stiffer, like 60% more torsional stiffness. Palm Beach, FL for Addco to use to make a prototype. I have now ordered on 8/19/13 the stock bar for delivery in W. The bar is quite complex in shape so it would be difficult to measure and make a drawing. Instead I pulled the bar off my Flex to take some photos to send to Addco. No, never got chance to look under a SHO.
